In a step forward for LGBTQ+ rights and equality in education, the U.S. Department of Education has recently enacted updates to Title IX regulations which outline explicit protections for LGBTQ+ individuals by addressing discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity, or sex characteristics.

PA House Makes Historic Bipartisan Step Toward Change to State Marriage Equality Law
Yesterday afternoon, Pennsylvania took a monumental step forward in the journey towards equality as our State House passed House Bill 2269 with resounding bipartisan support in a 133-68 vote. The bill aims to safeguard same-sex marriage rights in Pennsylvania by striking down an antiquated provision in state law that limits marriage to heterosexual couples.

Nine years ago today on June 26, 2015, the U.S. Supreme Court (SCOTUS) ruled on Obergefell v. Hodges, making Marriage Equality the law of the land across the United States. The Court held in a 5-4 decision that the Fourteenth Amendment requires ALL states to both grant same-sex marriages and to recognize same-sex marriages granted in other states.
New LGBTQ+ advocacy group Fairness Pennsylvania launches
HARRISBURG -- Organizers, advocates, and legislators from across the state stood shoulder to shoulder at the state Capitol Monday to launch Fairness Pennsylvania (FPA), the Commonwealth’s first full-time statewide LGBTQ+ civil rights in several years.
Erie, Pennsylvania, Declares Itself LGBTQ+ Sanctuary City
Erie, Pa., has declared itself a sanctuary city for LGBTQ+ people. The City Council adopted a resolution last month stating that the city “strongly supports the treatment of all individuals with respect and dignity, regardless of an individual’s race, ethnicity, color, religion, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, ancestry, age, disability, source of income, marital status, and familial status, including but not limited to the areas of housing, public accommodation, education, healthcare, and employment,” and going on to note the large number of anti-LGBTQ+ bills being considered in state legislatures around the nation, including three in the Pennsylvania General Assembly.
Funding for LGBT Center of Greater Reading stripped by U.S. House Republicans
Nearly $1 million in federal funding that was set to come to the LGBT Center of Greater Reading has been axed by U.S. House Republicans. The center was earmarked to receive $970,000 for its transitional housing program through the Community Project Funding program, which allows each of the country's 435 House members to nominate up to 15 projects for federal funding. The LGBT center's funding was secured by Rep. Chrissy Houlahan, a Chester County Democrat who also represents parts of Berks County.
SCOTUS ruling marks urgency in push for LGBTQ+ rights in Pa. as more challenges loom
The U.S. Supreme Court’s recent ruling that freedom of expression trumps a state law barring discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity highlights the need to redouble efforts to pass anti-discrimination protections for LGBTQ+ people in Pennsylvania, advocates said.
The decision, saying that a graphic designer could refuse to make websites for same-sex weddings without facing sanctions under Colorado’s anti-discrimination law, is narrowly focused on the First Amendment rights of business owners.
Pa. Human Relations Commission announces new LGBTQ+ nondiscrimination regulations
The Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission announced on June 20 an update to the Pennsylvania Human Relations Act that will provide protections from discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.
The new regulation, which will take effect on Aug. 16, covers discrimination in employment, housing, commercial property, education and public accommodations.
The new regulation updates the PHRA definition of “sex” — which is among its protected classes — to include pregnancy status, childbirth status, breastfeeding status, sex assigned at birth, gender identity or expression, affectional or sexual orientation, and differences in sex development.
